LABORATORY

The Nanoprobe Satellite Building (NSB) is a new office and laboratory at the Australian Synchrotron. This state of the art facility features a 50m long underground tunnel which connects Main Technical Hall to the NSB. This is not only a pedestrian connection, there is also a long nanoprobe beamline which runs through this tunnel from the centre of the technical hall and terminates in the endstation of the NSB.

ROLE

Lead Designer

The space is defined by seamless, cleanable finishes, including resilient sheet flooring with coved skirtings and smooth wall linings, paired with durable solid-surface benching and stainless-steel fixtures. Integrated specialist equipment and internal glazing support safe operation and supervision while maintaining containment. The result is a robust, highly controlled environment that balances stringent functional requirements with a clear, disciplined architectural expression.

A flexible laboratory space is designed to function both as a working area and as a circulation route to the endstation.

Large windows provide natural light and external outlook.

Durable, easy-to-clean finishes and robust fixtures ensure the space meets the practical demands of a scientific environment while remaining orderly and efficient. The layout allows day-to-day laboratory activities to occur without compromising access to the specialised experimental area at the terminus.

The staff kitchen introduces a warm, relaxed contrast to the highly controlled laboratory environments. Natural timber cabinetry and soft stone benchtops are paired with a muted copper-toned splashback, creating a grounded, tactile palette. Deep navy overhead joinery frames the space, adding visual depth and a sense of calm

A covered external walkway runs around the façade, defined by a deep cantilevered overhang with a warm timber-lined soffit.

The overhang is designed to minimise direct solar penetration into the lab spaces while creating a sheltered circulation zone for occupants.

The walkway is bordered by a low retaining wall and embankment, allowing natural light and views to the surrounding landscaping while maintaining privacy and security.
